Sewage Treatment Contractors Reminded To Do Quality Work

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water on Friday reminded contractors carrying out sewage treatment jobs to keep up with quality work or face legal action.

Its minister, Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui said many reports had been received on shoddy works such as leaking pipes which have caused much discomfort to the people and damage to property.

"We will not hesitate to take action in accordance with the existing laws such as imposing fines or taking back their licenses," he told a press conference following a visit to the Pantai Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) here today.

Chin said his ministry, through the Sewerage Services Department, will work with the National Water Services Commission and Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd to monitor from time to time the quality of work being carried out by contractors.

"We hope they can do the work given to them efficiently as the usual slip up from them is due to their own lack of efficiency.

"With the efforts to reach a developed nation status, contractors must change -- with them improving their efficiency and skills in the latest technologies and in line with current needs," he said.

Chin also called on the people to use water prudently, pointing out that this year was also "The Water Conservation Year".

Each individual must make it a point and take personal responsibility in using water prudently as such action would help in the conservation of water and the country's water resources, he said.

"Each consumer should remember that every one litre of water used involves a treatment cost."

The sewage treatment plant in Pantai Dalam meanwhile is undergoing a capacity upgrading process to handle sewerage treatment for a population of 1.8 million people.
