KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Water Association (MWA) believes that the Selangor state government has been misinforming the general public of the exact situation of water demand and growth in the state.
In a statement, it alluded to the recent disagreement between Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) and the state government over the water situation in Selangor.
To settle differences between the two parties, MWA proposed that the state government allow Syabas to present their data on supply and demand situation.
It said with these numbers, the state government could then reconcile the presented data with its own set of data.
"This reconciliation is essential, as the public is currently misinformed and misled with the current clashing of information between the two parties," MWA said.
The association further said that both sets of data from the state government and Syabas should be made accessible to the general public, and this could be done through the newspapers, websites and other public platforms.
The statement quoted MWA president Ahmad Zahdi Jamil as saying that in 2010, domestic consumption per capita per day in Selangor was 239 litres, the second highest among states in Malaysia.
The association said measures should be taken to prevent water wastage as the reserve capacity for water was currently very low for Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
MWA also said the federal and Selangor state governments should expedite projects such as the Pahang-Selangor Interstate Water Transfer and construction of Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant.-- BERNAMA
