TheStar:Sufficient water in Selangor

SELANGOR has more than enough raw water to supply to her people, said Health, Plantation Workers, Poverty and Caring Government Committee chairman Dr A. Xavier Jeyakumar.

He said seven dams – Semenyih, Langat, Klang Gates, Sungai Batu, Sungai Selangor, Sungai Tinggi and Subang – were at full capacity.

He said Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd had forecast insufficient supply of water in 2015.

“The issue is actually about connectivity at all the water treatment plants where excess water could be channelled to areas that do not have enough supply,” said Dr Xavier in response to a question by Dr Abd Rani Osman (PR-Osman) on Selangor’s plan to resolve the water problem.

He also said the state had recently taken over the Labu water plant.

Meanwhile, Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said illegal sand mining in the state had been reduced over the last four years due to the raid conducted by the respective district offices.

He said this in response to a question posed by Wong Koon Mun (BN-Kuala Kubu Baru) on why enforcement measures were weak and why Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd was set up to stop illegal sand mining.

Khalid said there were 969 raids in 2008, 889 raids in 2009, 727 raid in 2010 and 653 in 2011.

The sand mining hotspots in Selangor are in Kuala Langat, Sepang and Hulu Selangor.

“In 2008, 974 sand thieves were arrested, 159 in 2009, 91 in 2010 and 37 last year.

“As for fines, RM1.3mil was collected in 2008, RM425,000 in 2009, RM121,000 in 2010 and RM27,000 last year.

Khalid also said at a meeting held last month, it was decided that the town planning officer, legal officer, evaluation officer, surveyor and assistant district land officer from various government departments in the state would be involved in the sand mining raids.

Wong then queried why many bridges and riverbanks were destroyed and attributed it to rampant sand mining activities.

Khalid replied that Wong should check his facts first as there was no proof of this.--TheStar
