NST:Damaging results to Selangor water supply buffer

The consequences to the water supply buffer in Selangor may be damaging if all 430 projects in the state that were supposedly stalled have been given the green- light.

In saying this, Selangor Barisan Nasional coordinator Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed added that the success of projects in the state depended on the state's water reserve.

Projects given the green light needed to be wary as it may only be a short term solution, he said.

"According to our calculation, some areas in Selangor are fluctuating between 1.5 and 2 per cent water buffer, which is way below the industry standard of 20 per cent.

"This buffer is sure to dip if there is a dry spell and this will in turn affect running projects," he told a press conference at Bangunan Umno Selangor today.

He was commenting on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's statement on Sunday that 430 projects in Selangor had been postponed because of the water supply problem.

On the same day, Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim's political secretary Faekah Husin had said the delayed projects were an old issue and denied that there were any projects delayed over water supply concerns.

On the state government's intention to takeover Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), Mohd Zin questioned the cost implication to the state.

"Where is he (Khalid) going to raise the funds to buy over Syabas?

"There must be a willing buyer and seller, also a written proposal spelling out all the terms and conditions," he said.

The state government's threat to take over Syabas within 14 days did not follow the due diligence process, he added

He also said the Selangor BN would be organising a "Love Selangor Carnival" at I-City, Shah Alam on Feb 23 in conjunction with Chap Goh Mei.

A total of 1,000 tickets to Water World will be given free to visitors and can be obtained on the I-City website.

He added that Radio SelangorBN.FM had also launched a smartphone application which could be downloaded across the iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and the Blackberry.
