TheStar:Replace old pipes immediately, Syabas told

SYARIKAT Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) should immediately replace the old pipes in Selangor, particularly in Sungai Way New Village where villagers have to bear with low-water pressure and leaking underground pipes.

Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lau Weng San said the villagers started facing low-water pressure several years ago and he had requested Syabas to find a quick solution.

“The cause of the problem are the old underground pipes, especially in Jalan SS9A/14 and Jalan SS9A/13.

“The old pipes cannot take higher water pressure, causing leakages and higher non-revenue water. Although Syabas does carry out repairs immediately after receiving complaints, this is insufficient to resolve the problem.

“Syabas agreed to replace the old pipes in Sungai Way in a letter addressed to the Sungai Way New Village committee in April last year,” Lau said.

However, the committee was informed in December 2011 that the project has to be postponed pending approval from the federal and state government.

“The state government usually is not involved in Syabas’ old pipes replacement scheme.

“I hope Syabas can immediately resolve whatever internal problems they are facing and replace the old pipes in the new village. More importantly, Syabas promised to implement the scheme last year.

When contacted, Syabas corporate communications and public affairs executive director Abdul Halem Mat Som said pipe-replacement work had been put on hold since 2008 pending the restructuring exercise of the water services industry.

“Any request for pipe-replacement work can only be approved by National Water Services Commis-sion.

Besides Sungai Way, there are a few other areas in urgent need of new pipes.

“The pipes are old and the initial plan was to replace 6,000km of old pipes but only 800km have been replaced before the whole project was put on hold,” he said.

Abdul Halem said in the event of a burst pipe, residents could contact Syabas and they would rectify the problem.
