Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) today clarified that the water supply disruption in several areas in the Klang Valley was due to the rapid increase in water usage and not due to shortage of water resources.
Its chief operating officer, Datuk Ir Lee Miang Koi, said the situation resulted in all existing water treatment plants to operate at maximum level.
"The increase in water usage in the past few weeks has almost reached the maximum production and exceeded the production capacity of the plants for the past few days.
"Due to the high demand, there has been a remarkable drop in the water level at the main reserve pond, and with the hot and dry weather, has caused the water pressure to be low in some areas, and in some area with no water supply," he told reporters at a briefing on the water supply status in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya here.
He dismissed allegations that Syabas was responsible for the water supply disruption in the Klang Valley.
"There is sufficient water from the river and dam, but it is raw water and has to be treated to meet the safe standard for consumption.
"What we need is treatment plants to treat the raw water to meet the increasing demand, but Syabas has no power to build new water treatment plants because the matter comes under the jurisdiction of the state and federal government,' he added.
Lee said the water treatment plants were operated by Konsortium Abbas Sdn Bhd, Puncak Niaga and Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor (Splash), adding that Syabas would then buy the treated water to be distributed to consumers.
Due to the current limited water reserve, he said, Syabas had requested the operators of the water treatment plants to maximise their operations.
Since last May 17, 37 areas in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Klang were hit by unscheduled water supply disruption and low water pressure.-- BERNAMA
