The Selangor state government will continue holding off approvals necessary to expediate Langat 2 water treatment project if they did not come together with the restructuring of the state's water industry.
"It doesn't matter if it is delayed 100 years. As we have said before, we will proceed (approvals) together with the restructuring of the state's water industry," said Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in a press conference, here, yesterday.
Abdul Khalid said he had written to both Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui and Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on the matter.
"Peter Chin's answer in Dewan Negara does not help solve this matter. The Federal government must take into account Selangor's interest in solving this matter.
"The local authorities have been instructed to monitor the situation to ensure that each step taken will not have a negative effect and burden Selangor," he added.
He was commenting on Chin's recent statement in Dewan Negara that the Langat 2 water treatment project had fallen behind schedule by 29 months.
He said the Selangor government should withdraw its directives to local councils to hold off giving the approvals that would allow 22 tender packages related to the plant to be disbursed.
The minister said the project, according to the original schedule, should have been 68.95 per cent ready as of October this year but the status of the project was only 28.40 per cent complete.
It was reported that Selangor only have enough water to meet demand until 2014.
The Langat 2 mitigation project was among several pro grammes that were planned before the 2008 general election to cope with the high demand for treated water due to the mushrooming of factories and business parks in Selangor to prevent a repeat of the 1997-98 water crisis.
The water transfer project between the two states will see 1,890 million litres of raw water pumped daily from Sungai Semantan in Pahang to the Hulu Langat water treatment plant.
On the demolition of Hindu altar in Sepang, Abdul Khalid said he had instructed a study to be conducted on the actions taken by the respective local council.
"We will let the local council explain the process they had done and we will find out of they had followed the right procedure.
“We will also learn from this and take into account the people who are affected from the action taken," he said. On a separate issue, Abdul Khalid said he has received the list of candidates to replace Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Roslan Sakiman and his successor will announced next week.--NST
