Bernama:Health Ministry: Kelantan Must Treat Its Water Immediately

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai urged Kelantan to treat its water supply immediately, for fear it would jeopardise the health of the people.

He said the ministry's analysis found high levels of metal in the water, which should be treated immediately.

"The analysis showed risks to consumers, so the authorities concerned should take responsibility and upgrade their water treatment tanks," he explained at the Parliament building Wednesday.

'We will refer the matter to the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry for follow up," he added.

Liow noted that recent tests on Kelantan water samples not only detected heavy metals but the presence of the dangerous E.coli bacteria.

He advised the state's inhabitants to use only filtered and boiled water.

"Don't take this lightly, as it involves our basic needs. The Health Ministry will ensure the National Water Services Commission continues to monitor and make sure the water quality is improved," he emphasised.-- BERNAMA

Bernama:Kelantan Residents Urged To Punish PAS Government For Dirty Water

The people of Kelantan are urged to punish the PAS leadership for their shortcomings in providing clean water supply throughout their 20 years of rule in the state.
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said water is a basic need in each person's life but many have yet to enjoy it in Kelantan.

"Water is a basic issue. They were given more than 20 years to lead the state. If they can't solve a basic issue, I think residents should be more wise in deciding who can provide their needs.

"Syarikat Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) needs to find a way to channel clean water to its residents, and if they fail to do so I hope the Kelantan people replace the existing government with one that can give them clean water," he told reporters at his office, here Wednesday.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Defence Minister, said this when asked to comment on reports in a Malay language daily on the water quality in Kelantan which is said to contain heavy metals and dangerous bacteria.

A front-page report today highlighted that 96 per cent of children in Kelantan aged below six years experienced tooth decay and cavities due to insufficient fluoride content in the water supplied.

The report also quoted that according to the State Health Department, the percentage was much higher than the national average of 74.5 per cent.

He hoped the state government would not blame the central government for their failure to provide clean water to its residents.

"A healthy mind comes from a healthy body, and one way to obtain this is through water which is a vital nutrient for our body.

"Therefore, reject bad food the same way we would reject people who cannot provide us decent water," he added.-- BERNAMA

Bernama:Kelantan High On Water Wastage List

Beyond the issue of unclean water, Kelantan is said to be among states with the highest wastage of treated water, thus affecting the quantity of supply.
Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Mohd Fatmi Che Salleh said only 60 percent to 54 percent of the water supply actually reaches the consumers.

"I received information that most of the water supplied by Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd does not reach consumers due to leaks in the main pipes, thus causing wastage.

"For every 100 litres of treated water, only 60 percent to 54 percent reaches consumers. Water wastage due to leakages has worsened the supply situation," he told reporters here today.

Mohd Fatmi who is also Kota Baharu Umno division chief said this occurs at the expense of Kelantan people who should be supplied with clean and quality water.-- BERNAMA

TheStar:S’gor walks a thin line in tabling

SHAH ALAM: With the Federal budget and the Penang state budget already tabled, all eyes are fixed on the Selangor state budget which will be known on Wednesday.
Selangor is Pakatan Rakyat’s crown jewel, and the manner in which it manages the nation’s most developed state will come under the microscope.

After criticising the Federal Government’s Budget 2012, the pressure is now on Pakatan to show it can do better.

Being a good opposition does not automatically make the coalition a good government, and Pakatan will need to show, via Selangor, that it can do more than criticise Barisan Nasional with the 13th general election looming.

Never mind Penang, which tabled a deficit budget last month. It is in Selangor, where the fiercest battle between Barisan National and Pakatan will be fought.

TheStar:Resolve state water issue and abandoned housing projects, urges Noh

TANJONG KARANG: Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar has lambasted the Selangor government for not taking the initiative to settle the state’s water issue.

He said negotiations were at a standstill because the Selangor government refused to cooperate with the Federal Government.

“The water issue is still unsettled because the state government does not want to work with the Federal Government although allocations have been provided for the building of a new water plant,” Noh told reporters at a Korban Perdana event here.

Selangor’s water restructuring exercise continues to be uncertain and political factors between the state and Federal governments have been cited as the main reason.

Noh also said that the problems surrounding abandoned housing projects in the state must be addressed collaboratively by both governments.

Prior to this, Abdul Khalid was reported as saying that the state government had appointed Messrs Atkins and Halcrow to carry out auditing of the accounts and operations of SYABAS to avert water shortage in the state without being dependent on Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant (Langat 2) project.-- BERNAMA

HarakahDaily:Penjenamaan semula IWK merugikan
